I have the opportunity and privilege to work with students in my classroom of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and socioeconomic status. The students in my classroom need the opportunity to choose the books they are interested in reading, at a level that they can enjoy and comprehend.
My goal is to provide my students with accessible books that get them excited to read.
This year, I will be working with various abilities and interests, and I am hoping to be able to provide them with meaningful reading experiences that will spark a love of reading for years to come. I hope to be able to provide graphic novels for my students to help them bridge the gap between their interests and their reading levels.
My Project
In our classroom, we are passionate about helping kids become passionate readers. The problem we face is one of stigmatization - students don't want to walk around with books that make them appear less capable or intelligent than their peers.
Graphic novels provide students the opportunity to be perceived as readers while also providing them with texts they can tackle independently.
Who doesn't love to read a comic book? The books selected will help capture students' interest and give them the feeling they have been searching for their entire school-age life: the ability to enjoy reading.
The books selected here, the Science Comics series, will help students bridge the gap between their current ability level and the content that we are studying in the fifth-grade classroom. Students that are pet-owners will love to read about dogs in "Science Comics: Dogs: From Predator to Protector." Kids that have interests in dinosaurs and space will be eager to pick up titles like "Science Comics: Solar System: Our Place in Space" and "Science Comics: Dinosaurs: Fossils and Feathers" because they will be able to read them without the support of a teacher or parent.
