Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high poverty, low income district where at least half of our students receive free or reduced lunch. In addition, I teach students with learning disabilities in a small group LLD setting. Their self-confidence and self-esteem are also hindered by the lack of educational tools and resources.

My students have an array of social-emotional challenges and need more opportunities to feel successful!

8th grade is difficult enough, without adding in constantly failure. They are wonderful students; very caring and compassionate. What really amazes me is their resilience and their independent goal setting.

My Project

My students have a real thirst for reading, but struggle with finding the right books. They love reading books that are relevant to their lives and the world around them! These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy. Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read.

Building our library to include big titles such as, "The Hate You Give", "Poet X", and "City of Embers" will keep my students engaged in important topics!

Cultivating reading through offering variety is so important. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind and many students have been asking for these titles and are starting to track certain authors.

With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently on their own level. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with developing their passion for reading!
