In the novel, The Fault in Our Stars, the characters realistically face their cancer with both pain and strength. As cancer is tragically widespread, this novel gives us opportunities to talk with our students about coping with both the loss of loved ones and what matters in life.
My students are highly enthusiastic and social, but oftentimes they are reluctant to read because they feel intimidated or because they feel like the reading is irrelevant.
Last year, I was able to read this novel with my students, and I was happily surprised by how much this novel impacted them. Several students shared how they will not be taking different people and parts of life for granted any longer. My school has been striving to create a community of respect, and this novel invites readers to appreciate life and people.
My Project
My students will be reading this novel in conjunction with the Shakespeare play, Julius Caesar. This novel will be a capstone project of the skills we have been working on during the course of the first semester. The students will have discussed themes of overcoming obstacles, and this novel's relevancy is sure to pull the larger themes in Wiesel's Night and Shakespeare's Julius Caesar all together in a text that is very approachable. Students will complete independent reading tasks, and as a class we will discuss important passages together. Students will learn how to be more accountable for work outside of class, while the reading standards are reinforced.
This book became so popular among my students, I need more copies of The Fault in Our Stars for my classroom library to reach more students.
This book leaves an impact on those who read it. We want our teenagers to think both about the meaning of true love and how to cope with events in our life that are beyond our control.
