Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Too often, we teachers struggle to find books that reflect our students' rich cultural heritage. I teach reading and language arts to fabulous fourth grade students at Ralph J. Bunche Elementary School in Compton, California. All of the students at our school are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Our student body is half African-American and half Latino/a.
As a reading teacher, I try to expose my students to a wide variety of books that we can read and discuss to encourage critical thinking about our history and our world. The Coretta Scott King Books are a wonderful collection of books which have received an award given out annually to books by African-American authors and illustrators that show positive images about African-American lives, both real and fictional.
With this set of books, my students will read about Thunder Rose, the girl who could lasso clouds, and Bessie Coleman, the woman who fulfilled her dream of becoming the first African-American pilot. I would love to have a collection of these books, with their beautiful pictures, themes, and messages of inspiration to use as read-alouds with my students throughout the year.
These books will constitute a major component of my reading and character development curriculum, and I know my fourth graders will love learning and growing from this collection.
Thank you in advance for your care and generosity.
