Can't Stop, Won't Stop: Literacy, Culture, and Consciousness
My students need these books to develop a love for reading and an understanding that readers CHOOSE to read and enjoy it. I want them to have a choice, and to continue to choose reading for life.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is a small, vibrant and engaged community of young scholars located in the heart of Denver, Colorado. We are one of the most diverse schools in the state, and over 60% of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.
These young scholars defy all stereotypes of today's youth.
The proudly fly their "nerd flag." They take pride in their ability to connect culture to scholarship. They are risk-takers, and they are dreamers.
They love books and knowledge.
My Project
The books I am requesting are choice books for our students. A staggering number of my students have never finished a book, and rarely read by choice. Books like Jabari Asim's The N-Word, Jay-Z's Decoded and Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak will help them think through hard issues and act in their communities
Literacy is a civil right, and when students choose their own books, they almost always challenge themselves to push their reading.
They will read books about popular music that provide a critical and conscious lens on our society. They will form groups and take action from their reading.
