Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When in a new country, first learning the language, you quickly learn to use any and all means to communicate - hand gestures, broken sentences, and pictures. My students have all come from other countries and are now learning the value of these other modes of communication as they begin to learn English.

In our community, Queens, the most diverse county in the world, my students need all the tools they can get their hands on to communicate to speakers of English and dozens of other languages.

Working with each other to learn science, I want them to also communicate that science to our amazing community.

My Project

To accompany the hydroponic and soil-based gardens we are building this year, it is imperative for my students to tell the story of what they have made. Whether our gardens are on the sidewalk or at the local library, they require explanation in order to be more than a curiosity.

A color printer can be invaluable for telling a story in ways that black and white just can't, but it is a very limited resource in our school.

To complement the color printer I am asking for in another Donorschoose project, we will also need inks to run it. The colors of their photos, graphs, and PSAs will shine through because of the printer and these ink cartridges. In addition to English, I am sure they will also be honing their native language abilities by translating these explanatory materials so that all speakers in our community can understand their work.

I sincerely believe science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) have the ability to change our world for the better, and unite people around better ways of living. It all begins though, by teaching the wider world what the science we are doing is all about. Please donate so my students have this tool for having their voices heard loud and clear.
