This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
With reading Lexile levels ranging from 1st to 7th grade, the books that my students are recommended to read vary from "Go Animals Go" to "Persephone: a Greek Myth". How many 12-year olds do you think would want to get caught reading a book that a 6-year old is reading? None, and that's the point. This project is meant to give students the freedom to choose and read a book within their Lexile range without having to worry about being judged.
For many of my middle school students, a book is judged by its cover, so they would rather not read at all.
My middle school students would rather be caught dead than be discovered as a low-reader.
My Project
The Chromebooks will be used to increase reading skills without the shame of reading books at their level, no matter how low. Students will be able to access online reading programs like RazKids, ReadWorks, and NewsELA and comfortably read texts within their Lexile levels without having anyone judging the level in which they are reading the texts.
These Chromebooks will be an essential tool in helping boost my students' self-confidence, reading fluency, comprehension, and inferential skills.
Students will be able to practice their reading daily and hopefully motivate them to read more as they get better and begin to read with more ease.
For my English Learners, it will help them pass the district reclassification assessment and finally reclassify as fluent English proficient. For my students with specific learning disabilities, they just might be able to reach their Individualized Education Plan goals.
