My Project

Our school is the first tuition-free, public charter school in Arizona focused on the educational needs of children with autism. We serve students across the spectrum-non verbal, low academic skills to highly verbal high academic students. The saying is "If you've met one Autistic person, you've met one Autistic person." Our students are all unique. They have different learning styles and ways of communicating. Many of my students are very passionate about their favorite shows, video games, and movies. This is often called a hyperfixation in the world of Autism.

Once they get the skills to play chords, my students would be able to decide what kinds of songs they would want to play, furthering their passion for music and allowing them to explore their hyperfixations while learning.

The great thing about learning the basics of an instrument is being able to choose your own music to play. Once I learned how to play chords on the ukulele, I was able to look up any song I ever wanted to learn. This is the skill I hope to pass on to my students.

By having these ukuleles in my classroom, students would be able to learn the music that they love with enough practice. The students would be taught chords which would allow them to play the background to any song and let them sing over it. With these ukuleles, they would also be taught how to read ukulele tabs, a translation of sheet music to numbers that allow students to understand music all the more easily. All in all, the students would be taught chords and tabs with the end goal of choosing their own songs to learn.
