I am a second year K-5 music teacher who travels between two elementary schools in the same district. I share a classroom with the art teacher and I split my resources between both schools (which is a super big pain, unloading and reloading my car every day!)
But my students are SO eager to make music!
They love to create with one another and their enthusiasm is intoxicating. They don't have all the resources in the world, but they have never let that stop them from experiencing music. I want to be able to give them what they need to take it to the next level!
My Project
I have been playing ukulele since the age of 12. It quite literally saved me, I am sure of it! After growing so frustrated that my hands were too small for my guitar, I nearly gave up on playing an instrument. I started writing lyrics as a kid, but didn't have anything to play my songs on. Enter my 2010 Christmas gift: a bright green ukulele. My life changed. I taught myself how to play everything and it went with me everywhere I went. It became my third limb!! Fast forward to now, I still bring my ukulele with me everywhere I go. I play it every single day in my classroom. I perform with it almost every weekend. I even released two original albums featuring my ukulele.
My ukulele has given me so much and I desperately want to give my students that same opportunity.
Ukulele is pure joy. I truly believe it is the greatest instrument for kids. It is small enough for their little fingers. It is SO portable. It's versatile enough that they can play SO many genres and styles. I can teach concepts like scales, chords, and tabs using the ukulele. But most importantly, the ukulele is an instrument that my students can create anything they set their mind to with!
Nearly every day when I play my ukulele in the classroom, at least one student asks me: "When can we learn how to play the ukulele like you??" I am asking for your help so my kiddos can grow a "third ukulele limb" just like their music teacher! :) Your generous donations will fund a set of 20 ukuleles for my classroom. My students and I will be SO appreciative.
