Candy -- The Great Motivator!

My students need... CHOCOLATE! For the past few years, Ive awarded a candy bar to my Student of the Week, which left them full and my wallet empty!

My Students

All students enjoy being "caught doing good". In my classroom, I choose a "Student of the Week" based on effort, performance, and enthusiasm. The students love the recognition, but what they love even more is the choice of candy bar that they receive at the end of the week!

My students come from all parts of the city to attend a charter school.

They are smart, enthusiastic, and true joys to be around. My days begin with, "GOOD MORNING!" and end with, "HAVE A GOOD NIGHT!" They truly are the kind of teenagers who make teachers feel that we have chosen the right career.

My Project

A few years ago, I decided to try an experiment with my French classes. I introduced them to the idea of the "Eleve de la Semaine", in which a student from one of my classes would be selected as my "Student of the Week". The chosen student gets his/her photo on the "Star of the Week" board, ten extra credit points, and, of course, the prized candy bar at the end of the week.

Will the lure of one candy bar turn students who don't really care about school into scholars?

Probably not. But it does bring out the competitive spirit in the 95% of my students who want to stand out as the best of their peers!
