Imagine yourself standing in front of your classroom door watching the storm of students walking toward you and wondering which one of these students did not have a proper dinner, which one of these students isn't feeling well, or which one of these children experienced an unpleasant family situation the night before.
As a teacher, it is my job to ensure every child feels safe, feels important, and feels the desire to learn something new every day.
I was once told that it is hard to be just a mediocre teacher, but it is even harder to be exceptional.
Working in a Title I school has allowed me the opportunity to grow not only professionally but also personally. Passing out weekend snacks to students every Friday is a constant reminder that my job is not only to teach academics but to grow a community of lifelong learners while promoting education as the key to future successes.
Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment, and this includes their learning environment. Wobble chairs and portable writing stations allow students to choose where they work. Flexible seating also gives students the ability to collaborate, communicate with their peers, and develop critical thinking skills. Students should feel comfortable in their learning environment and be eager to come back to their home away from home.
Not all students learn in the same manner, and, as a teacher, I want to adapt our classroom environment and promote learning for each child in their own unique way.
