Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are searching for their voice of a generation. I teach Language Arts in a workshop style of teaching for the 8th grade. We are an urban area that is in high need of inspiration. I have students ranging from all levels and interest, but the one thing they all have in common is they are searching for their voice in the literature of today.

Since we are in need economically, there are very little options to gain supplies for my students. My students have shown interest in the author Walter Dean Myers. We examine all of his work throughout the various genres as an author study. One way in which we work together on literary concepts is with the book "145th Street Stories". We examine his style of writing together and then compare what we find to his poems and novels that they study independently and in literature circles.

We are in need of a classroom set of the book. My students will be able to have the books to help them examine the way in which Walter Dean Myers has developed his style over the years.

With your help, my students will be able to connect with a successful author who has been where they are and has felt the way many of them feel. My students, especially my struggling readers, need this type of inspiration to help them believe in themselves and in the power of their minds. Walter Dean Myers is a voice of inspiration to a young generation.
