My students need supplies to create a vibrant summer scrapbook to share their summer adventures with our class the following school year and help bridge the summer gap.

My Students

Do you remember your summers? I remember relaxing at home, going on vacations, 4-H and sports, and playing with my neighbors. I know my students have many of those experiences and more, but they don't have a way to capture these events. I want to help them capture them and share them with us!

Our students are full of life and adventure here at our school.

Next year I will get 17 or 18 new third grade students and I get to meet with them in May. At that meet and greet I would like to send them with a summer scrapbook. In this scrapbook they will collect pictures, draw pictures, create artwork, write about their family experiences, tell me about the books they've read, make wishes and much more. Then at the start of the new school year they will return these to our classroom and we will discover each of our summers! This scrapbook will take us through many adventures as a class.

My Project

All of the items I have requested will go into a summer scrapbook. I have already created the summer scrapbook pages, but need to bind them using the binding I've requested. I have also requested coloring and drawing materials. These will be used to create their drawings, artwork, and writing pieces. Along with those materials I would like Ziploc bags to store all their scrapbook items in, to keep it safe over the summer. Also, I would like to send them with a book that will lead into our first unit in third grade. A lot of my students do not have any of these materials available at home, so this will make this project fun and exciting! Through this summer scrapbook my students will work on their writing, reading, math, creativity, collaboration with their parents and friends, and will come back to school ready to share their summer with us. This project is fun and upbeat, so they will learn in a sneaky way! I also requested post cards to send to them to encourage and remind them.

In my district our students are 33% proficient in reading and 44% proficient in math.

We need to find summer activities to try to help raise these scores and bridge the summer gap. 54% of our students are economically disadvantaged, so these materials would not find their way to my students hands during the summer, unless I give them to them. Students love to create, so why not let them create something that will help them keep their summer memories to share with our classroom?
