Can You Solve It?

My students need compositions books and labels for math journals. They also need magnetic manipulative that can stick to the white board, so students can visualize different ways of breaking apart and composing numbers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from an urban community in California.

75% receive free or reduced lunch.

We lack materials and supplies because of major budget cuts in the elementary public schools, which has made it a bit difficult and has forced us to use our creativity to teach. I have a diverse group of energetic first graders this year. They range from a few high performing to majority of low performing students. Yet, I am determined to provide students with meaningful learning experiences where they can acquire life long skills to be successful individuals.

My Project

"I can't see, Ms. Lam." "How many are you holding?" "I don't really understand." Often times when I'm teaching first graders, it is easier to illustrate how 15 can be broken apart in different ways, then to try to draw it or write it out. By having math magnetic manipulative to teach, it would save me a lot of instructional time. It would also be much easier if I can pull my students closer together on the rug and teach them on a magnetic white board then try to cram everything on an Elmo machine while they're sitting in their desks.

In addition, I would like to implement math journals into our math lessons.

I would like to use compositions books to give students space to solve math problems in different ways. I also want to use labels so I can type out the word problems beforehand so they don't spend precious time copying the problem and instead spend their time solving and writing about it.

I hope by having these materials, my students can accelerate in math and learn to embrace word problems instead of becoming discouraged with them.
