At our unique school, all K-5 students present theme-based projects twice a year for their classmates, parents, and teachers. This is the core of our assessment of each students' progress. I am the technology and video portfolio specialist here at this K-5 magnet school that is based on Howard Gardner's theory of the 8 Multiple Intelligences.

During a typical "show and tell" for elementary students, most students shout out, "Can I see?" This then leads to students crowding around the object or picture so that all can see. During a typical student's theme project presentation, a student will bring along a picture, a magazine cutout, a prized possession, or perhaps family pictures. Many of these can't be placed on the one poster board visual aid they use, and many students are sometimes unable to see what the presenter is trying to share.

We have been working very hard to utilize and incorporate technology into our daily work here as well as our project presentations. Some fourth and fifth grade students are using Power Points for their presentations. Some are utilizing small video cameras to interview people in the field of their chosen topic. But there are many students who are unable to share a picture, a newspaper article, or maybe a prized possession so that the whole audience may see. We are currently utilizing video, LCD Projectors, TVs, cameras, etc. for our presentations, but a document camera would alleviate the need for students to have to wait until they get back to their classroom to see the items the presenter would like to share.

Your help in supplying us with a document camera would allow the student presenter to feel as if the items he/she is sharing with their classmates are considered important when everyone gets to see. The "show and tell" experience for an elementary school child is priceless. When children get to show off things that make them uniquely who they are, they feel important and valued. Technology is not the focus, but is being used as a tool. The use of this type of technology allows for easier viewing of a hand drawn picture or a treasured possession. We all want to share what's important to us.
