My students need 4 microscopes so that they can understand how scientists use them and a document camera in order to view and assess each other's work.
Nothing brings a smile to my face like the sound of amazing discussions from my students. Even though it is still early in the school year, their vocabulary usage, conversational habits and critical thinking skills have improved and they are continuing to make significant progress each day. Students enjoy collaborating with classmates for special projects and classroom activities. They always look for a place to add their individual creativity. This year, we are specifically molding the students to think more like scientists and engineers by helping them develop thought-provoking questions. They are then responsible for coming up with possible solutions and building and assessing models.
As soon as students enter my science classroom, they are greeted by the door with a handshake and a smile.
My school is a Title One school consisting of students who come from economically disadvantaged households. Despite this obvious setback, together, we have developed a positive science classroom that focuses on learning, collaboration and hard work. We make a collective effort to embrace all cultures (Caribbean, Latin American, Russian, etc) so that students feel comfortable sharing their ideas.
My Project
This project, "Can you see me? Microscopes and Document Camera", is vital for my 150 students. My students share resources in the classroom and while they don't seem to mind it, it is quite noticeable that some of them do not get a chance to explore using the microscope in their big groups. This prevents my kinesthetic learners from building concrete knowledge. Having microscopes will give students a fair chance at grasping new concepts in our Cell unit and practice their microscope skills for the 8th grade state exam. In addition, having a document camera will help make our science classroom a place where we can learn from our mistakes. It offers students a chance to feel good about what they do and presents a more collaborative way of offering constructive feedback.
Help me create a more inclusive, hands-on, and collaborative science classroom!
After all, we are molding our scientists of tomorrow!
