"Mistakes are proof that you are trying," is a quote that I impart to my students in the hopes they internalize that learning mastery takes consistent practice. It's a process that is not about right answers but asking inquiring questions to gain insights and raise awareness around how we learn and ways we learn best.
As a teacher of students with special needs, I serve students whose learning difficulties may range from recall, focus and attention, and speech.
At times these cognitive difficulties are compounded with the challenges of learning English as a Second Language while having to master subject content.
My classroom is about encouraging my students to overcome self-doubt and build confidence in their ability to learn. My High School is a Title I school located in New York City. We have an extremely diverse population of students from around the world, including Latin America, Asia, Europe, and Africa.
My Project
Adjusting to in-person learning has been challenging for both teachers and students.
Having these supplies in place will enable students to learn in a clean and effective environment.
Masks make it difficult for students to see and hear and a voice amplifier will ensure that all students can hear me teach loud and clear while we maintain 6 feet social distance. Yoga mats will help students practice mindfulness while they struggle to reacclimate back to sitting at a desk while in the classroom. The MirrorMe camera substitute will enable me to show instructions on printed documents both for in person and remote learning. Sanitizing wipes allow students to disinfect their hands as they come in and leave the classroom. This is particularly important in high school where students and teachers commute between classrooms and the short transition period doesn't allow everyone the time to stop by the bathroom to wash their hands. With these wipes, students can continue to practice personal hygiene and maintain public health awareness in the crowded school space.
