Can You Please Provide Scientific Calculators For Our Class?
My students need 33 scientific calculators to use in classes of AP Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, General Chemistry and General Physics.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every year, when students enter high school science courses - namely chemistry and physics - many are usually surprised to discover that the physical sciences require a great deal of algebra and math. The good news is students are allowed to use a scientific calculator, but not all can afford them.
Our student population is by majority Hispanic (70%), followed by Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, and various other groups.
Almost all my students classify in our state's lowest economic category, which qualifies them for financial assistance such as reduced lunch and free tutoring programs. For nearly 50% of my students, the primary language that their family speaks at home is not English. Many of our students were classified as ESL students (English as a Second Language), when they began high school, but have now been reclassified as English Proficient. To cut costs, the science classes at our public high school have recently increased to average sizes of 42-47 students per class. We are not a private school, so in order to maintain our current supplies when budget cuts are abounding, our science lab programs truly survive from donations and grants.
My Project
Much of the classwork and lab work in chemistry and physics requires the use of a simple scientific calculator. The basic Casio calculator that I am choosing is excellent. It provides the calculation functions (like exponents, scientific notation, and logs) that students will need to become familiar with to succeed in high school and college chemistry and physics courses. Chemistry students will use the calculators for problem-solving sessions and labs experiments in their study of units like Measurement Conversions, General Stoichiometry, Solutions, Gases, and Thermodynamics. Physics students will go further into mathematics by also utilizing the sine, cosine, and tangent functions of the Casio calculator in their study of units like Kinematics, Force, Work and Energy, Gravitation, and Rotational Motion.
With your donation, all my students will have access to these basic necessities.
Anything that you can do to help sustain and improve our program is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!
