Do you remember being a kid and you seemed to have more fun with the box then the toy that came in the box? This year my students will be using boxes and other recycled materials to build props. My vision is to provide them with the materials, and tape, need to build these things on their own.
My students come from one of the most violent communities in our nations capital.
Most come from single parent homes and live within 3 blocks of our school. Despite the challenges they come to school with, they are some of the sweetest and most eager preschool children you will ever meet. For most, school is where they get to experience so of the most basic things; playing on a playground, eating a family style meal, playing in the sand and water, and painting.
My Project
These various tapes will be used to put the construction of props into the students hands. With our new Tools of the Mind curriculum, students will be using boxes, paper towel rolls, etc. to build the props for our themes. With the tape and dispensers, I will be able to allow students to get their own tape and materials to build their props. This allows for their creativity to fully take form. The amount of tape will also allow for them to build props all year long and allow for mistakes to be made.
These materials will allow for my students to fully embrace their creativity and build props how they see them.
Without these materials, students will not be able to fully engage in their learning and will have to experience props through an adults eye and not their own.
