My Students

Help students in rural NC create a Diego Rivera or Romare Beardon-like masterpiece!

Ramseur, NC was featured on 60 Minutes several years ago, as a town that has lost its major industries, where joblessness and underemployment abound.

The art supply budget at our middle school is down to $600 for the year for over 200 students. This is my 30th year teaching at the school because I believe my students deserve as rich an art experience as they can have with the limited funding available.

My students are very excited about being in an art class but recently we have not been able to provide a variety of supplies.

Please consider helping these young people learn about acrylic paint, watercolor paper, and pastels. Currently my students have to settle for free cardboard from the school cafeteria, cereal boxes, and copy paper as their art materials. These materials can be used creatively but is it right to have students only use these materials in their art education? We could enliven our school’s art program substantially with a small amount of additional funding. Please consider helping.

The experience could be life-changing for many!

My Project

I'd like my students to use a variety of materials in order to have the best creative experience and to stretch their imaginations. We will be able to complete photo-montages using pastels in the style of Romare Bearden, create and paint abstract sculptures as he did, and collaborate on group projects like murals a la Diego Rivera.

Students' art education will be made better because they are exposed to different types of media.

Your support will allow us to move from using cardboard and typing paper for painting to having the opportunity to use heavier paper made for paints and pastels. Most artwork is produced on canvas--the canvas boards will enable these middle school students to try a low-cost canvas substrate for the first time!

Completing a variety of projects will help students to relate to their environment and neighborhoods just as Bearden and Diego explored their surroundings. Being able to instill a sense of pride in their community will increase students' confidence and taking on complex art projects increases problem-solving skills and persistence.
