This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
About 90% of my students are English Language Learners. They range in language proficiency levels from Entering (Beginning) to Commanding (Proficient), and they come from many different ethnic backgrounds ranging from the Caribbean (Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic), Yemen, African countries, and Central and South America. They must learn to put their differences aside and work together to learn a new language.
My students take a exam towards the end of the year to measure how much growth they've made in the English language.
It can be overwhelming for many of them, especially since some have had no formal schooling in their native country, as well as, adjusting to a new country. They need all the resources they can get in order to be successful!
My Project
Students will use the listening center during literacy centers. Having a listening center will help them to improve and strengthen their listening skills and grammar, which they will need to be successful on the state's second language assessment exam.
My entering and emerging students will greatly benefit from having a listening center in order to support them in language knowledge.
Many of the students do not hear English being spoken at home, so their only exposure is usually in the classroom. The listening center will help them to learn English quickly and easily to ensure that they are successful in school.
