This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I truly believe in Nelson Mandela's words: "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Fifteen years teaching and I still believe we can make a difference; my students are 8 years old and they already believe they will change the world... I believe they can!
Some of my students experienced the pleasure of holding a book and listening to a story for the first time when they started 2nd grade at the beginning of this school year.
My students come from low-income families and many of them had to overcome many challenges before starting school. We are a great community school in the heart of the city. All students in our school receive free lunch and free breakfast. Most of my students' families came to the United States to give their children the opportunity to receive a good education.
My Project
Not all my students work at the same level; while some of my students are fluent readers who are ready to start 3rd grade, some of my students are still learning how to read sight word kindergarten books. My role as a teacher is to create a sheltered learning environment where all students feel they can learn and participate. We all learn from each other and we understand that learning content is as important as learning about character. We have a wonderful reading software in our school which help struggling readers and students with disabilities to learn how to read, but the headphones are broken.
New headphones will allow non reader students to listen to text read aloud to them so they can work independently and receive the support they need to achieve academic success.
Sight word books will help struggling readers to practice high frequency words so they can learn how to read quickly and effectively. Cleaning wipes will keep our classroom clean and safe. My students know that learning is relevant, but they also know that learning is lots of fun. Can you hear us having fun?
