Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember hearing a favorite story? Listening to the narrator bring the story to life? Books on CD give an important introduction to listening — a skill that students must master in order to learn to read. Please help my 2nd grade students become independent readers!

I teach second grade with a class size of twenty-eight excited and determined students!

My students know each other very well, since most of them have been together since kindergarten. They enjoy class and look forward to coming to school and learning. We are a very diverse class that includes 17 English Language Learners. The ethnicity is our room ranges from Hispanic/Latino, White, African American, Asian, and Pacific Islander. More than 90% of students at our school receive free or reduced-price lunch. We live in South Seattle, Washington.

My Project

Many books on CD have interesting sound effects, music, and multiple narrators that are especially motivating and fun for young children. I am launching my very first literacy groups, and would LOVE to include a listening center. By donating to this project you are helping me develop life long readers. I plan to set up a listening center, so that four to six children can listen to the same book at the same time. I will provide this listening center every day, during our 90 minute literacy block. By the end of the week, each child will have listened to a favorite book on CD. This will provide a wonderful opportunity for children to hear their favorite books read aloud again and again. The more they listen, the greater the likelihood that they will learn new vocabulary words. The opportunities for playing creatively and acting out parts of the story are endless!

By listening to these wonderful and animated stories on CD with their own headphones, my students will build sight vocabulary, be exposed to phrasing and fluency, foster independence, and allow opportunity for self-discovery.
