My students need 6 new stethoscopes to accurately practice taking a patient's blood pressure. The equipment we have now is outdated, making the hands-on learning opportunity difficult and frustrating when teaching our vital signs unit.

My Students

My Introduction to Health Occupations and Health Occupations I classes spark and fuel an interest in the medical field. Students are introduced to a variety of health-related careers and get hands-on practice with first aid/CPR skills, taking vital signs, and shadowing experiences in various departments at our community hospital.

Students thrive in classes that are hands-on!

Learning takes place best when they get to do it themselves. The students are eager to try out skills that can apply to their future.

We are a small, rural school with just over 700 students. My students are made up of all grade levels, with more than three quarters of our students coming from low socioeconomic backgrounds. Despite these challenges, my students are eager to learn, and enjoy challenges! They want to learn about medical terminology, law and ethics, but are also eager to practice a variety of medical skills in a small group settings.

My Project

In our vital signs and cardiovascular unit, health occupation students practice taking blood pressure using an aneroid sphygmomanometer, also known as a blood pressure cuff, and stethoscope.

This is the first time students have practiced the skill so they are obviously both nervous and excited to try a new skill on another student!

The equipment we have now is outdated, and often students can't detect the heartbeat of the patient. This makes it challenging when trying to practice systolic and diastolic readings. The stethoscopes are an integral piece to learning how to do the skills correctly. Students in these two classes are interested in pursuing a career in the medical field. The ability to accurately take a patient's blood pressure is a valuable skill that will serve them well in their future employment endeavors.
