My Students

Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, about 50% of our students are socio-economically disadvantaged, about 25% are English language learners, and about 50% qualify for free and reduced-price lunches. Less than 50% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college. My students are full of energy, creativity, passion, perseverance, and diversity. Working with middle school students keeps me up with the latest clothing, music, and video game trends. I am forced to be a lifelong learner when trying to incorporate their interests into my classroom.

My Project

Coming back from learning at home, students have been adjusting to new classroom norms. Teachers have had to adapt to teaching with a mask on and manage students who have not been in a physical classroom for over a year and a half.

With enhanced audio in the classroom through microphones and bluetooth speakers, students will be able to hear the teacher and transitional music better.

Trying to regroup students while they are actively engaged in lab activities is very difficult through a mask. Teachers have to project themselves more which may lead to losing their voice, or sounding hoarse. Having specific music play through speakers for indicators of quiet work time, lab movement work time, and clean up time helps to establish class norms without the teacher using their voice.

With a microphone, students who are hard of hearing can also hear the teacher better or it could be used to record the teacher more clearly.
