My school is located in a rural community. We are one of the poorest elementary schools in the district. We are a Title I school of approximately 500 students. Through a government subsidized program all of my students are on free lunch and breakfast. Our attendance zone includes a domestic violence safe house, so for some students, school is the most reliable constant in their lives.
Because of the low socio-economic standing of our community our kids go without things other schools consider standard.
My Project
Twice a year my students put on a musical program. Our sound system failed several years ago and the portable speaker and microphone work great for a small crowd. Well people love our programs and our crowds are never small!! We need a new sound system so everyone can enjoy our programs - especially the students.
My students work very hard preparing their musicals and their performances need to be heard!
No matter how great a show is, if the audience can't hear it, all the hard work is for naught. I want my students to beam with pride for a job well done. I want each person in the audience to be able to say to their child, "Wow, I heard you and you were great!"
Nearly all students from low‑income households
