My students are budding mathematicians. They are future scientists, engineers, and numerical adventurers. They have the world at their fingertips, but are also dealing with traditional middle school worries. They want their lives and opinions to be heard. Our class is a diverse group of learners. They are students with gifted learning needs, students for whom English is a second language, and students with special learning needs. Our class wants to delve into the world as fully as they can.
Our class wants more from learning.
They want more from me as their teacher, from themselves as learners, and from our interactions with each other in our classrooms and throughout the world. They are already connected socially; they want to be connected academically.
My Project
Each student in our school has his/her own Chromebook. In order to effectively incorporate technology usage, my students need headphones and microphones. Because of the high poverty rate at our school, many students cannot afford to buy an appropriate set of headphones needed for school use.
A class set of headphones with microphones will allow my students to create podcasts, videos, and collaborate globally.
My students are excited about what they are learning and want to share their knowledge with others. We have created videos in the past, but the background noise drowns out my students' voices. The headphones with microphones will alleviate this and allow my students to clearly communicate their ideas. Collaboration and communication are 21st century skills that students need to be successful in school as well as within their careers.
