My Students
I work with every child in my school. Some have special learning needs, but they are still expected to learn and achieve. Some are learning English. Our school is located in a low socioeconomic area. Some of our students are homeless. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Over 20% are in ELL and/or Indian Education or SPED programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, as well as Natives from rural Alaska.
We are not a Title l school, but all of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
They try very hard to listen and learn, but they struggle because our school lacks the budget to support them. They materials to help them be successful. School is everything for them. They deserve the chance to be successful.
My Project
As the library media specialist at a small, urban elementary school, I struggle to provide learning opportunities to all my students. My school is an old school and has limited resources. Although many of my students have limited access to technology, they are still expected to be successful readers, writers, and producers of presentations. I have requested a listening center, personal CD player, speakers, headphones and audio books so they can listen to stories during their daily reading intervention time. I want these resources so my at-risk students can listen to stories and develop their vocabulary, reading, pronunciation skills and listening skills. Independent access to these stories would open up new reading opportunities for my K-2 graders. I know these resources will help build their fluency and comprehension.
Every child deserves a chance at success and reading is the most important skill in elementary school.
With the help of donors, my at-risk students can become better readers. This fully equipped listening center will give my students access to books and stories. Every day, I help provide reading intervention for primary students. While I work with one group, other students can work independently and listen to books. Please help me help my struggling readers. Make reading come alive for my students.
