This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I began implementing the Modern Classrooms instructional model in my physical science classes. In this model, students move through a series of self-paced lessons to demonstrate mastery on mastery checks that lead up to the official assessments on each topic/standard.

A durable, high-quality set of class headphones, stored in a way that holds students accountable for each pair, is an essential classroom tool for Modern Classrooms implementation.

In a Modern Classroom, direct instruction is done through short teacher-created videos and guided notes. Computers are used for other learning activities using websites like Quizlet, NearPod, ExploreLearning's Gizmos, and PhET simulations.

Students have responded very positively to the Modern Classrooms model. They appreciate being able to move at their own pace, which might look like cruising through lessons and getting to more advanced extensions (Aspire To Dos) or being able to take things more slowly and participate in reteach sessions with peers or me in order to master concepts. I look very forward to a second year of implementing the model with the rising 8th graders!
