Can You CHANGE the Way You Use Math?

My students need 25 calculators as well as 5 cash registers to prepare them for the real-life working world using their math skills.

My Students

"And your total is..." is something we hear on a daily basis when we go shopping. What could be better as a functional math skill than to practice and use technology in the classroom? We need calculators and cash registers to not only practice working with others but also to practice money skills.

I teach in an inner-city, low poverty high school in Pennsylvania.

My students are in the Program for Students with Exceptionalities (Special Education), in the Life Skills Support Program. Many students have been enrolled in this program since their Elementary School days. The students follow a Functional Curriculum where they learn Daily Living Skills as well as Functional Math and Reading skills.

My Project

My Life Skills Students require materials presented to them well below their actual grade levels. They need materials presented to them both visually, auditorially, and kinesthetically. The students require many hands-on manipulatives such as calculators to use the four basic functions while completing daily, functional math problems. They also will utilize the cash registers (with power cords) in the addition of items, totaling those items, and giving change to their peers while shopping in our classroom shopping center. They will gain independence as well as the social skills they need to survive once they graduate from High School.

By your donations of the calculators and cash registers, my Life Skills Students will have the opportunities to practice skills they may use once they graduate from High School in a competitively employed position.
