My students need reusable science-based manipulatives and materials, as well as storage space to keep materials and assignments together and organized.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Where are my tape measures?"; "Where did I put those experiment charts?" I despise not being able to put my hands on science materials when I need them, because there is no proper storage in my classroom. When materials are not readily available, time to teach and learn is wasted!
My kids are so fun!
They are constantly asking me "why" and "how come" questions, which inspires me to think of innovative ways to "answer" them... I am a new (former kindergarten teacher) third grade teacher at a predominately Black, Title I school in Virginia. It is a small school, serving a neighborhood of low- to middle-income families. My class this year is pretty special to me-they are the SAME students I had when I started teaching at my school three years ago! This is my first year teaching third grade and I basically came into an empty classroom with nothing to "inherit". So, I am starting all over again building my new classroom. It is very difficult to request materials and resources because of a perpetually tight budget; I am constantly finding creative ways to make lessons fun...
My Project
When I was younger, my favorite subject was science. I always asked, "Why did that happen?" and, "How does that work?" As a teacher now, I attempt to put a lot into my science lessons. We do experiments, pasting activities, and nature walks. Being a connoisseur of science, of course I also run a GREEN classroom; we recycle paper and old homework assignments, reuse plastic materials, and turn off the lights when it is sunny outside! Any way I can help the Earth, I will do it. I am trying to ignite the same level of passion for the environment in my kids. The items I am requesting will complement our "Green Campaign". These materials can be reused, recycled, or are MADE from recyclable materials. They will be used to contain science materials and manipulatives; they will provide a storage area that is easily accessible for my kids to grab what they need for their science centers quickly.
This project is important, because it gives me an opportunity to practice what I preach; to motivate my kids to care about their environment as much as I do.
With these items, I will be able to SHOW my kids what I am talking when I say, "We are GREEN in Ms. R's class!" Your help in funding this project will make my science learning stations more mobile and interactive for my children. Not only will you be helping my children, you will be helping ME, as I "organize" my new classroom!
Thank you.
