My Project

How many of us have sat through lecture after lecture and worksheet after worksheet in our science classes, classes that have the potential to be so fun and engaging? To often, lack of time, resources, supplies, and energy are pushing teachers to choose lectures and worksheets instead of fun and engaging learning experiences. With your support, I believe student practice does not have to be boring! Imagine the shift that will occur in when instead of sitting in rows solving practice problem after practice problem, students get to learn through playing games and competition with their peers. I cannot wait to see what happens!

The three games I have requested will be incorporated into our Periodic Trends, Chemical Bonding, and Chemical Reactions units, promoting student engagement and eliminating boring practice through worksheets.

These games will be rotated between chemistry teachers at my school, transforming the learning experience of hundreds of students each year for years to come! My students specifically are English Language Learners, so these games will have the added benefit of allowing them to practice their literacy and communication skills while learning chemistry! What a win!

I selected these specific games because they allow students to practice the skills and concepts our students performed weakest on this year. I love labs and demos, and I seek to make my class as exciting and hands-on as possible. However, I have struggled to find a way to make reading the periodic table, determining ionic charge, and writing chemical formulas fun and engaging, resulting in my students performing lower in these areas. I believe these games will provide the spark that is needed to those "dull" practice days and improve my students' learning outcomes, attitudes towards science, mental health, and creativity.
