My Students
I teach in a diverse, Title I school in a suburb of Washington, DC. Preschool is often the children's first time being away from their parents, so I strive to make it a fun and engaging environment.
My preschool class includes two, three, four, and five-year-olds with special needs as well as a few typically developing peer models.
The children have a variety of disabilities, including Down Syndrome, blindness, autism, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, and language disorders. I also have a few students who are typically developing who serve as peer models for language and socialization. My students come from culturally and linguistically diverse families and many face socio-economic challenges.
My Project
Children learn so many skills in the block area. My students build Science, Tech, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills by experimenting with balance, counting, designing new structures, and copying existing buildings. Children can learn concepts such as symmetry and balance through block play. They build social skills by taking turns and negotiating to share toys and work together. Children can also develop their pretend play skills by taking on new roles and acting out scenes with dolls or props. Toys such as the PlusPlus, Squigz, and hammering set will not only boost creativity and design skills, but also help to develop fine motor skills.
My students need new building toys and other materials to bring life to our block area.
We also need materials to add to the block area when we engage in our building study. During the study, we learn about building materials, how buildings are made, and design features. Materials such as the Homes Around the World blocks can help the children learn about other cultures. The Community Buildings set will link our learning to familiar buildings in our area. Children can work as engineers and architects using the doors and window blocks with the blocks already in our classroom.
Children with some disabilities struggle to engage in pretend play, but realistic props and visual supports can help. We will work on pretend play skills with the construction worker costumes and pretend tools. Additionally, the bus and plane toys can be used with dolls to support more opportunities for dramatic play. Cars are always a popular toy in a preschool room, the addition of the new garage toy will help play become more purposeful.
