This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
How frustrated would you be if your had something to write, but do not have the fine motor skills to form letter legibly? How frustrated would you be if you wanted to make a card for your Mom, but do not have the fine motor skills to cut out a heart? These are the challenges facing my students.
I teach a K-2 autism classroom in a socio-economically challenged city with students who not only have disabilities, but have the challenge of being poor, and living in a violent neighborhood with many parents who do not speak English and lack support systems.
The school has limited funds which can not cover all the needs of every classroom. My students are smart and motivated to succeed, despite the many limitation of the environment around them.
My Project
I have 9 students total – all with autism or related behavior disabilities. I have 3 students who have very poor fine motor skills (coordination in their hands which gives us the ability to write and use scissors). The tools which I am requesting will help the students develop fine motor skills.
A new student started in my classroom last week. He came from another country, and although he is 10 years old has never attended school. He appears to have good fine motor activity in his hands, but has never been taught to hold a pencil and how to form letters, so he will also benefit, along with the other students with fine motor difficulties, because he needs to be taught how to write.
I see the challenges my students face every day and strive to try to provide every advantage I can to them.
Obtaining these resources will give me additional tools to help my students have functional handwriting.
