Kindergarten is so much fun! My students learn in many different ways using all of our senses and multiple intelligences. I use a wide range of techniques to help all my students succeed no matter what their level. My students attend a Title One school. Most of my students come from families from a low socioeconomic status, with over 70% of our students receiving free lunch. Our school is also one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Brooklyn. Our school is a caring community of successful learners, which can be seen through collaborative student project-based learning in and out of the classroom. Kindergarteners in my class love to work with hands-on materials and have many different opportunities to practice a skill before it is mastered.
My Project
Every week, readers shop in in the classroom library for 10 leveled books. These are their books for the week and they are used during both classroom reading time and for homework activities. Currently, the students choose their books and put them in their Ziploc bags for storage. Needless to say, we go through many Ziploc bags every week and some of our books are paying the price for this system. With these 36 book envelopes, we will be able to give our students organized, labeled, and safe storage to carry home books and keep them shiny and new for many other classes.
These book envelopes will be better suited for the volume of books that our students bring home each week (including read aloud books which often don't fit in their Ziploc bags).
We have learned a lot this year about community and respect regarding our school, classmates, and classroom supplies. We hope these book pouches will protect our books while helping us reinforce the importance of taking care of books that belong to our classroom community for our current and future readers.
