This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In my second grade class, every student is special and unique. I currently teach second grade in Newark. I've taken joy in being a part of a special school community where students, families, and teachers all work together to give our students a strong social, emotional and academic foundation. We all have the same goal in mind: to cultivate a nurturing environment in which we are committed to challenging each student to meet his/her optimal potential academically, socially, and emotionally by respecting, appreciating and challenging students in a caring community, while building a sense of responsibility and respect.
At our school we are all STARS: we show kindness, take responsibility, act safely, respect everyone and stay positive!
And every day we make sure to SPARKLE and SHINE!
My Project
My students need basic school supplies. Every day I get the same questions from my students. They ask if they can have a pencil. I look in the pencil container and there are none. When I ask if they have a pencil, they explain that they don’t have any pencils. When I ask them to take out a notebook to write in, they explain that they don’t have any notebooks. Unfortunately, my students had a very chaotic beginning to the year with inconsistent teachers. Many of their school supplies that their parents had bought are no longer usable. There are no pencils left and all notebooks are unaccounted for. It is very hard to get through the day and teach these young children when they don’t even have basic supplies. Asking their parents to buy another round of beginning-of-the-year school supplies is a lot, considering that many come from low-income homes, and were barely able to afford to send in school supplies in the beginning of the year. I am asking for donations for basic school supplies so my students have pencils and notebooks they can write in. I am also asking for chart paper and markers so I can make charts for them to have as a reference. I’m asking for tape so I can hang the charts up. I am asking for a case of copy paper so I can make my students worksheets for extra practice.
