Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The greatest feeling in the world is when a child asks you if he or she can read you a story. I yearn for all of my students to share that feeling with their classmates and with their families.
The school I work for is a Title 1 School filled with students from all over the world.
Many students have parents who cannot speak, read, or write in English so the only reading practice they receive is in the classroom. Therefore, it is important to instill a love for reading and a love for being able to bring a story to life.
My students love telling me that a word they just read is on their spelling list or they went to a place just like the character. However, many times those experiences with the text end the minute they walk out the door. I want my students to continue to enhance their reading abilities so they have the confidence to pick up any book and tell someone everything about it.I want my students to be confident in their own reading. Often, they focus on reading each word that they don't bring the text to life. Adding expression and improving fluency is a hard skill for my students but with interactive centers, those abilities will quickly flourish.
My Project
The materials that I am requesting for my classroom will be used during Reading Centers. Each item correlates with our standards of learning in Reading, Writing, and Language. These centers will improve my students' comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills. They will be able to read stories independently and gain more confidence in their own abilities.
My students are always eager to work in small groups with me and I want that excitement to continue with their independent centers. I don't want to look up and see my students going through the motions of each center. I want to look up and see them excited and engaged in their learning. These centers will teach them how to be responsible for their own learning and will encourage self discovery.
This project will benefit my students for years to come and they would be forever grateful for the kindness you have shared with them.
My students love to learn.
They love to discover new ways to learn and are excited when they master a new task. These materials will make my students more confident readers. It will give them the desire to read more books and to share those books with their classmates and with their families at home. What they learn by using these materials will greatly impact their reading ability and will increase their desire to ask someone, "Can I read you a story?"
