My Students
My students are middle school students, age eleven to fourteen. They dedicate themselves before the school day, during the school day, and even on weekends to our school music program. I conduct five different ensembles in the school, including concert band, jazz band, and marching band. We participate in two annual music competitions; one statewide and one northeast regional. We also perform at our local elementary schools and during our Spring Musical. In addition to my performing classes, we have students in our Core Music program as well. These students learn the essentials and foundations of music, such as reading notation, counting rhythms, playing keyboard, and even performing on bucket drums.
My Project
I have very unhappy students right now. My clarinetists are playing with overused reeds that produce a bad tone and smell funny too. Reeds are a thin piece of wood used to vibrate, creating a sound on the clarinet. We have run out of our supply and are not able to purchase any more. A good quality reed will produce a full sound on the clarinet and an overused reed will produce a thin and weak sound. We are currently preparing our competition music and are in need of producing our best sound yet. I wish I could provide more for my students but we are facing a reed drought at this time.
