Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school passed out technology fairly quickly after the shut-down began and we have been able to reach about 35% of the students on a regular basis. I have had regular book clubs on zoom and they can be painfully middle school awkward- in ways that they were not at school. They refuse to talk or show their faces because they feel self-conscience.

The one thing I hear from students is how much they wished they checked out library books before the school closed.

Many parents have asked for non-tech activities such as puzzles and games. They want things to touch and to interact with that does not involve a screen!

My Project

Many students have reached out because they have no books at home and they want books! I have requested books and games to make care packages to help students get through the summer and still learn without always going online. Students can share books and games with their siblings as well. There is no summer school available this summer and we really fear this learning loss combined with the loss of school time will have a negative impact on the health of our students. Having a small at-home library and a few games will be an attempt to ebb that flow.
