My 3 year olds are some of the most amazing children I have ever met. They thrive while living in one of the most dangerous communities in our nation's capital. Some have gone through more in their young lives than many of us will every have to endure in a lifetime. Yet every day, they walk down a hill to school where they are able to escape the violence that riddles their neighborhood and find solace in our classroom. Despite all of the challenges they face outside the school walls, they still come to school each day ready and excited to learn.
My students blossom with the educational and enrichment opportunities being offered, which helps them to build their background knowledge and exposes them to things they otherwise wouldn't be exposed to.
For all of them, coming to school is where they have any opportunities to build their academic and social foundations to set them up for success later in life.
My Project
The foundation of reading comes from a student's ability to be able to recognize the names of letters and match those letters with the sound they make. These learning materials will help my students be able to learn the names of letters in a fun and engaging way.
Most of my students enter PK3 already behind their peers in more affluent neighborhoods.
Most of the activities will also help them in the development of their fine motor skills which is critical for writing, another important component of early literacy. The alphabet beads will help students to have a meaningful activity in the toys and games center. The Snap-Together Letters will give them a meaningful activity in the block center. The magnetic letters will help them in the writing center.
