My students need a bike with a back seat to allow my students with physical impairments an opportunity to ride around on a bike with a typical peer play buddy.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an early childhood special education inclusion teacher in a Pre-Kindergarten classroom at an elementary school. My students with disabilities are fully included into the general education classroom and curriculum.
In our current financial crisis teachers have to think of ways to provide equal access to curriculum with little or no budget. It's difficult to accommodate children with special needs without spending some money on adaptive equipment.
This year I have a few students with physical disabilities that prevent them from being able to motor a standard tricycle. I have personally bought other adaptive equipment to promote their gross motor skills and I am always looking for equipment that will allow them to access our outdoor playground alongside their typical peers. Then I saw the TRICYCLE TAXI and thought how fantastic would be it for my students to be able to take a ride on the bike path just as their typical peers do each day...the only difference is they would be enjoying the ride as a passenger. There are so many social and school readiness opportunities that occur on the yard within this one activity that sometimes my little ones might be missing out on. Waiting for a turn, reading our street signs around the path, practicing basic safety skills are just some of the shared experiences of being able to ride around on the path. If the children can ride with a peer their inability to motor the tricycle won't impact their access to this very basic Pre-K activity.
Your generosity can eliminate a boundary that otherwise is very present in the daily routines and lives of little ones with physical disabilities. Their disability is visibly apparent and at this age they require extra motivation to participate in activities where they may appear different than their friends. I know this tricycle would be a favorite of ALL the children in our program and for those few minutes that they enjoy their ride around the path, maybe they won't be thinking of their physical limitations. Perhaps they will simply be thinking, "Can I catch a ride!"
