This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am writing this proposal for my high school students who participate in our general music class. Our high school serves a large urban area and has a high percentage of students from low income homes. Many of my students do not have the opportunity to experience high quality music instruction outside of the school setting. It is exciting to see them grow in their knowledge and excitement of music. Many of them will continue their participation in the music program for multiple years.

My Project

My students in general music are learning how to play ukuleles. The students in the class are having a great time exploring their abilities and learning how to play. They have been asking if they can take an instrument home to practice. We have just enough instruments to use in the classroom and can't let students borrow instruments at this time. We are hoping to acquire a few more instruments so that students can take an instrument home to practice for a few days. Many of my students are participating in this kind of music activity for the first time. If we had more instruments, students with a special interest in learning how to improve their playing ability would have the opportunity to take one home to practice for a few days.
