This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are from low-income families that are of Hispanic and African-American descent. Most of the students speak two languages and struggle with the transitions between the languages. Some students can not afford basic school supplies, get a good night sleep, concentrate on their educational success due to home issues that some adults never have to think about.
It is my job to provide a safe and effective environment for a successful academic future.
I focus on each of my students' needs through small group and one on one work. It is my goal to keep students engaged and focused while in small groups. I have to be very creative with this due to our schools limited funding for extra materials. These materials would help my students stay focused and productive during their center time.
My Project
What better way to get a student to learn but through a game! Can Do games will help boost reading and writing skills of my students. They will be able to practice in small groups with their peers on skills they struggle with. They will have hands-on experiences with game boards, tokens, and most importantly text.
Developing skills in reading literature and informational text are the key to building vocabulary, figurative language, parts of speech, prefixes and suffixes, and a love of reading.
I strongly believe my students will not only develop these skills with the CAN DO games, but successfully master each skill. They will be able to adapt these newly learned skills to our other class subjects, especially our Writer's Workshop.
