This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Our students live in Washington, D.C., and many have never left the surrounding area. I would like for my students to experience camping through pretend play. We have an outdoor area separate from our playground; I would like to use this space to set up a pretend camping site for my students to use during pretend play time.
Camping is where the adventure begins.
Camping outdoors can provide my students with engaging play activities, such as enclosing themselves within small, cozy spaces, cooking play, and collecting and packing up play materials. Pretending to camp out is a play theme that can extend over time and in many directions. This will give my students chances to iterate on their ideas and invent new play scenarios. Pretend camping, like the real experience, also offers kids the chance to stimulate multiple senses through nature.
I am excited to give my students an outdoor, hands-on play experience with camping skills where they can even learn about fire safety, learn to stay safe while taking risks, and connect to their outdoor environment. I am requesting a hiking play set, a tent, and various other camping-themed supplies and books.
