Camp Read-A-Thon Grows a Love of Reading!

Help me give my students and entire student body, a memorable Camp Read-A-Thon experience that includes finger flashlights for every student for our capstone event-FLASHLIGHT FRIDAY!

My Project

As we embark on the upcoming Read Across America Week, we are taking this time to create a two week Camp Read-A-Thon event on campus, including a community literacy night. Our goal is to truly foster a culture and love of reading on our campus. This will be achieved in a number of ways. Each day during these two weeks will have a special theme, for example, FLASHLIGHT FRIDAY, where students can bring a flashlight to read with. With the help of our donors, we would like to provide each student with a finger flashlight to read with on this day.

Our front foyer will be transformed into a small forest with trees, complete with a wood-like welcome sign above our entrance doors inviting everyone to “camp.” It is our vision to have an evening event that provides both a special time between community and school, while also providing parents with information on how to help their child become a better reader.

Each grade level will have their own literacy activity set up for students and families to participate in when they arrive. Printed information will be given to all families on ways to help at home. Drawings will be held for small baskets of items including books, flashcards, and puzzles, however we need some help gathering these raffle items from our donors. A camping tent will be set up in the front foyer with books inside and a “campfire” made out of streamers for more reading opportunities and fun family photo ops!

We have BIG PLANS for Camp Read-A-Thon! In our planning stage, we have already made cardboard trees, painted banners and signs, and borrowed a tent, but we need some help purchasing additional items to make this a success.
