Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every morning we begin with a community circle. We check in with each other about the "good things" that have happened since we were last together. These meetings have been a fantastic way to build community in the classroom: respect, conflict management, trust, and empathy. We are ready for more.

My students are amazing (I know, everyone says that).

And mine really are. Many are still developing fluency in English. A few are still working on the basics (reading, writing, spelling). But when it comes to academic curiosity ... they have it. This is a group that cheers out loud when I announce that we will need to decrease our time outside because the of the time we will need to finish a science project. They look forward to working in teams to build electric circuits, solve a multi-step math problem, or deconstruct a poem. They are still kids and the team work is not always smooth or focused. But I know that we had reached an important point in our time together when I began to hear them tell each things like: "Please stop wasting time, I want to know why the light bulb is not lighting up" or "Maybe you don't care about this stuff, but I do. Stop talking, because I can't hear." They are hard working, loving, smart, and a whole lot of fun.

My Project

This trip to Camp Champions will serve to bring these awesome kids together in an entirely new way. The challenges of the ropes course will test their critical thinking skills AND their trust in each other. I know that they will return to the classroom with an even greater respect for themselves as individuals and in their peers. Already, in small way, they encourage each other to try new things or to be brave when speaking up in class. I cannot wait to see them trying to figure out the many challenges they will face at Camp Champions. In a safe and caring environment, they will take reasonable risks, stretch past their "comfort zone," and learn more about being responsible for themselves and their classmates.

Any financial support to make this trip possible will do far more than pay for the bus or the sandwiches.

Successfully scaling a 30-foot wall is scary, fun, and exciting. But it is also about these incredible kids seeing that they can reach beyond their limits. With an experience like Camp Champions and the memories they will build, these children will know that they can scale the walls that stand between them and higher education, seeing the world, rewarding careers, and amazing futures.
