Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle schoolers are all about their friends! The middle schoolers will use these digital cameras to enhance the stories they write about school events. The students support their Language Arts program while they read, write, speak and listen about what is happening with their friends on campus

Overall, we have a traditional middle school with a progressive staff that is working to transform into a place of community, personal growth, and academic rigor.

There are approximately 1,000 students at our middle school, and we are employing peacebuilding and community building strategies to help students thrive during the tough times of pre-adolescence. We are striving to create a large middle school that feels like an extended family and is a safe, healthful place for students to learn about content, their peers, and themselves. Our school is a melting pot! About 40% of our students label their "race"/ethnicity as White, 40% Latino, 4% Black, 3% Asian and 2% Filipino, and 1% Native American. They are socio-economically diverse as well. Not quite half of our students are living near the poverty line and are eligible for free or reduced lunch. The students at our school are full of life and love of learning. They are eager to grow physically, intellectually and personally.

My Project

Our students need 2 digital cameras to use in the yearbook, journalism, and computer classes. They are going to use these cameras to inform students about what is happening on campus and document the events in images. In addition, the students will use the cameras to create power points about themselves and their teachers. These cameras will help us build community among the 1,000 students on our large campus.

This project helps kids feel more connected to our school and with each other.

The students will use the cameras to document students' lives during the middle school years. The yearbook and newspaper classes will take pictures of school dances, competitions, dress up days and important events such as Red Ribbon Week and Promotion. These cameras will help make and preserve students' memories.
