My students need 2 digital cameras, 2 memory cards, and 2 pouches for recording science projects and for creating presentations.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"You can observe a lot by watching" said the eternal Yogi Berra. What he didn't say is how much more you can observe if you had a picture to remind you of the moment. For my English Language Learners, it takes time to first learn the words before they put them to a moment.
My high school students are all recent immigrants to the United States.
As a group, they all have a common mission: to learn English while completing the same high school requirements as native English speakers. To overcome this daunting task, we use a collaborative, project-based, interdisciplinary, and content-rich environment in all classes. All teachers are both content and English teachers. In my science class, I use a hands-on activities approach to encourage the use of English in all of its forms - reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Even a student with no English carries education and experiences with them. My projects are designed so students can express who they are and practice their new language with peers. In this system, students who come to me with no English are able to get full scholarships to universities and colleges here in America to pursue their own American Dream.
My Project
Science class has lots of "A-HA!" moments that come and go unless we have the means to preserve them. Digital cameras are an invaluable tool for project-based learning because students can capture those moments or express themselves in photos, then begin to put words to those photos. Since my students work collaboratively in groups on all of their projects, photos can preserve an idea or an event long enough for them to develop and practice their conversation about the task at hand.
Cameras have helped us save moments in past years: college visits, museum trips, and in-school projects. We have a few cameras we call our own, but on a team of 75 students, it is never enough! If our class had enough of its own cameras, I could integrate them into all of our projects. We would no longer be dependent on reserving older and unreliable school-wide cameras weeks in advance and could finally capture those "A-HA!" moments in class and on field trips that you just can't plan for.
Your donation will give my students a way to express themselves and preserve their experiences.
Years down the road, they will look back on the pictures they took with these cameras and appreciate the long journey it took to find their voice and achieve their American Dream.
