My students attend a neighborhood high school in Chicago. Many of them are the children of immigrants. Many of them come from families that work hard and struggle to pay the bills. Some of them will be the first member of their family to graduate from high school.
My students are also creative and talented and inspired, working to find and develop their voices and stories.
This is my first year teaching yearbook and photography, and my students are very excited about the opportunity to become photojournalists documenting and telling the story of a year out of their lives. They want to develop their skills and realize their visions.
The technology resources available to my students are severely limited compared to resources available in neighboring suburban districts. While we do have cameras for them to borrow, many of them are dated and glitchy. Beyond that, the stock lenses we have are not adequate for the challenges of the course. We have highly competitive athletics teams at our school, and we need a camera body and lens to capture them appropriately.
Students in my yearbook class are eager to take our work to the next level by developing their expertise as photographers. We have cameras in our yearbook department, but most of them are old and basic. My students often come back from shoots disappointed in the limitations created by the equipment they're using.
This Canon body and lens kit will help my young photojournalists develop their skills working with equipment that gives them added control over their images.
Many of my yearbook students are aspiring photographers, and this setup will help them develop their technical skills to prepare them for future endeavors in photography.
