My students need a camera, a DVD player, and a 7-outlet surge protector for special needs recreation skills, and (real) picture schedule making, to help their day make sense.

My Students

Do you know what it is like when you can't think of a word for what you are thinking? My students do not have all the words they need. Many of my students cannot just say what they want to do next when given a choice, they need real item pictures to use as their words.

My students are a group of kids with severe special needs.

My class is in a general education building of 7-12th graders. They are active children within their community. Many of them are limited verbally. All of my students like to feel responsible. As middle school and high school students, they like to be given choices, and with that they need a way to communicate those choices.

My Project

The camera will allow me to take pictures of the materials we use, teachers they have for classes, activities as they are happening for use in their communication and schedules. The camera will also allow me to take pictures of fun events we have in class or on field trips. Giving students copies of these pictures makes them feel part of a group. I have done this in the past with my own personal camera. I keep copies of these pictures to add to graduation videos as often times my students parents do not have pictures to include for that kind of class video. I am asking for a new camera as my personal camera has been broken. The new DVD player is for movies, of course. We have recreation leisure activities as part of my curriculum. Many of the social skills needed for hanging out with friends or family need to be taught. The DVD player is for movie day. We make popcorn and role play going to the movies.

It is important for everyone to get to make choices, know their schedules, and participate in their own life.

No one wants to feel like their life is constantly run by others. Getting to make choices and being able to hang out with friends is an important part of any teenagers life. These materials will help me to facilitate and teach these important skills my students need. Thank You.
